Epsilon Eridani: The Rust-Bucket Gateway
"Centauri has the money. Sol has the history. But Eridani? Eridani has the movement. Everything you eat, shoot, or fly passed through here first. We don't care about your credit score or your citizenship. We care about the manifest. Is the cargo heavy? Good. Then shut up and lift."
Dockmaster Ivan "Ironhand" Krell
Ran is the third-nearest star visible from Earth without instruments, and it is visible from almost all of it. Every culture that ever looked south and wondered saw this star and did not know what it was. For two hundred years before the Shift Drive, humanity aimed listening arrays at it and waited. Ran never answered.
The star is young. Barely a billion years old, smaller and cooler than Sol, burning at five thousand Kelvin in a dull orange that makes every unfiltered photograph of the colony look like it was taken through weak tea. Youth in a star means temper. Ran's magnetic field is violent and its stellar wind is thirty times the pressure Sol exerts on Earth. It turns on its axis once every 11.2 days, which means the same scarred hemisphere comes back around and looks at you roughly three times a month. Nobody on Njord calls this a rotation period. They call it storm week, and they plan surgeries, births and Jumpgate transits around it.
Ran is also drifting. She belongs to a loose company of stars that were born together in the same cluster and have spent the last billion years pulling apart. It is not clear that anyone in the Hegemony finds this significant. It is very clear that Nav-Gilders do.
The system was selected in 2169 because it was close and because Ægir proved there was mass here worth the burn. It was not selected because it was rich. Ran is measurably poorer in heavy elements than Sol, and the full assay did not return until the colony fleet was already committed. Monolith has never retracted the projections it published in 2168. It has simply never published them again.
Then the fleet arrived, and found a world nobody had known was there.
